Time - the most valuable resource we all have and something that many of us often spend without thinking about it.When we do think about it we often see it as distant, unlimited in a way, a concept with an end far away that isn't tangible, or as something there is a lack of. <ul><li>Not enough time in the day</li><li>No time for this or that</li><li>Something to be suspended for another, often undefined, time.&nbsp;</li></ul>How does that help us when we are trying to make progress towards goals or build a life we want?How can we use the concept of time to understand how to make decisons?<ul><li>There is no time like the present</li><li>There is no yesterday or tomorrow, only now.</li><li>Memento mori</li></ul>These are phrases and sayings we can recognise and understand at a level but what do we do with them?I'm a fan of James Bond films, one of the most moving quotes from the last film No Time to Die is this."The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time".I think it says that we need to try to be present, to enjoy as many moments of time as possible pursuing the things that matter and are important to us.&nbsp;To be able to say - at the end of our time - I lived, fully, without fear where possible, with love and with people who I loved and who loved me.To know that we were brave and gave things our best shot if they held with our values and what we wanted to do and how we wanted to feel.<h3>Who am I to do that?</h3>And yet our internal imposter syndrome prevents us at times from making choices about how we will spend this wonderful thing that we have with its finite amount.Imposter syndrome prevents us from making progress, holds us back from big decisions, tells us we are not worthy, or our experiences are not important enough. It stops us applying for jobs we think are too grand for us, it stops us talking to people from fear of rejection, it stops us telling those around us how we really feel, it stops us being brave and sharing our changes of direction.&nbsp;Instead it limits us by creating worries and projections of the future that are negative. We rarely imagine our new idea will be well received, that people we know will applaud us, that when we share ourselves with the world people will celebrate that.&nbsp;No, we instead focus on the idea that others will find our idea or new direction too new and uncomfortable in relation to the us they know today. They will ask "who does he or she think they are?", they will reject the new version of ourselves and our identity as an imposter and so we impose that on ourselves first. We imagine our job applications will be rejected, or that we will not live up to expectations. We imagine that in this future that we aim for we are not good enough somehow, we won't make the grade. So we stop or pause and lose momentum and sometimes even give up.<h3>What if it didnt have to be like that?</h3>What if you could understand that the "risks" are small and the possibilities are endless instead. What if you could change your belief - this projection of an unknown future - to a positive one?<ul><li>Everyone will love my idea, people I know will be proud of me, there will be curiosity and interest. </li><li>I will help people with my new idea or plan or goal and so it will be well received by those who I want to reach.</li><li>My experiences are more than enough to be successful if I put in the effort.</li><li>I will match enough of the job criteria and if I need to learn more on the job I'll do that because I am good enough.</li></ul>Are you right in having these positive views? Will they change the outcome and the future?Perhaps, perhaps not, but they are also just a projection of a future that doesn''t yet exist. So it doesn't matter to be right, any more or any less than the negative version does. It's not real, it's just a view of the future. You might as well have a positive belief than a negative one if both are made up anyway.I don't mean to say live life without the idea of consequenses or in a reckless manner. I also don't mean to live in fantasy. But if we understand the roots of this imposter within us and allow that understanding to shape how we look forward couldn't it help us change how we end up spending our time?Couldn't it help us be brave, take the chances, send the letters, apply for the jobs, tell people we love them, build the businesses we want, try the hard things and aim for the clouds. Wouldn't that give us a feeling of satsifaction, that we took that step, we tried, we dared to fail, we gave it a go and our best shot. Even if it didn't work out exactly as we imagined or hoped.&nbsp;In anything we do we learn. "To love and to learn" as I've paraphrased Ann Rice in my <a data-mce-href="https://lifewithoutwirescoach.com/meet-me" href="https://lifewithoutwirescoach.com/meet-me" title="Meet me">Meet me</a> page here. In a way isn't this a better way to live than to stop ourselves pursuing our dreams and goals because we project the future and don't believe in our place in it, our value in it?We're all on a clock, for most people we don't know when it will stop. At my age, on average, I should have about 350 months of time left if all goes well. Around 1500 weeks. I'd like to think I use them well and don't try to let falsely held limiting beliefs let me waste the opportunities I have to do so.&nbsp;The future doesn't yet exist, create it beautifully is my ethos for a reason.&nbsp;All the best /Scott&nbsp;

What do Innovation thinking and Solution-Focused Coaching have in common?Innovation and solution-focused coaching share a surprising amount of overlap, even though one is often thought of in the context of business and technology, and the other in personal development or leadership. As I have a foot in each door in these areas it's become obvious to me that using the thinking "What can create value?" can be very helpful in getting unstuck in both.Both focus on generating possibilities, building progress, and enabling action. Instead of asking, “What’s wrong?” the focus is on questions like:<ul><li>What do we want to achieve?</li><li>What’s already working that we can build on?</li><li>What strengths or resources do we have?</li></ul>This mindset opens up creative thinking, whether you’re innovating a business model or coaching someone to overcome a challenge.4. Collaboration and Shared OwnershipIn innovation, teams brainstorm, iterate, and co-create solutions. Solution-focused coaching takes a similar approach, treating the coachee as an expert in their own life and guiding them to take ownership of the solutions.Both approaches encourage people to actively participate in shaping outcomes, ensuring the solutions feel authentic and sustainable.5. Emphasis on Possibility and PotentialWhere traditional approaches often focus on fixing problems, both innovation and solution-focused coaching see problems as opportunities for growth and change. <h2>What is the Miracle Question?</h2>It's all too easy when facing a problem to get stuck in the "problem". We go round and round asking the same questions and often coming up with the same answers. The problem seems impossible to solve, overwhelming in size and the goal very far away.What if there was a different approach, one that ignores the problem itself and instead aims to look towards the solution, to help understand the wanted state and find some first steps in the direction there?For this you need a little time to yourself so try to find a quiet place where you can think without distractions. You want to set aside the issue you are facing for a while and instead look to the future, to a day some point in the future where you have woken up, a miracle has happened and everything is exactly as you want it to be, your problem has gone away.It's not important right now to know how you got there, you have woken up and it's all good, but you don't have any memory or knowledge of how this miracle happened, the key is to really imagine this day and the new experience in as much detail as you can. Visualize what your life looks like in this wanted future and ask yourself the very simple question...<h2>What is different?</h2>It's a simple question but one you need to repeat, over and over. What's different for you in every way? <ul><li>What's different around you?</li><li>What's different about where you are?</li><li>What do others around you experience as different?</li><li>What's different about what you are doing?</li><li>What's different in how you feel?</li><li>What's different in who you are with?</li></ul>When you think you have exhausted this, dont stop, the next question to ask yourself is...What else is different? And keep going. You really want to understand every aspect.This is not easy, by yourself you need to really push deep for all levels of "what else".Talking it through with someone, a friend or even a coach can help you keep going until you really find all the clues. Aside from encouraging some positive thinking (which is very helpful in itself) this gives you insight as to how to move forward. Choose an aspect that is different in this picture and you can begin to ask yourself, very specifically, what could I change to move to that. Have I any experiences in the past that are similar and where I have done something that has worked to make a change? What do I know already that seems like new thinking here?What small step can get the ball rolling in that new direction? That's it, the first small step. You don't need the whole plan, you develop that in stages. The first step is enough for now.No longer are you looking directly at the problem and trying to figure it out, you are looking at a bright new idea and working backwards to today for the small steps to get a new path there, new insights into how to get "to" the desired outcome rather than a focus on getting "away" from the problem. The problem itself becomes less relevant.&nbsp;A very simple example:A Solution-Focused Approach to RunningProblem “You can’t run very far. You’ve tried again and again, but nothing sticks. Your knees hurt, you get bored, and it feels like you always end up quitting. Every time you start you stop a few days later and feel frustrated. But you want to run because you know you'll feel better for it and you had hoped to enter a local race later this year."In your miracle future you are running the 10km race, feeling strong and fit, with your partner cheering you on. Its a sunny day, you are running with a good friend and having a great time. You're wearing some new running kit, some new shoes and a running shirt you really like. You're running slow but steady and really enjoying every moment. You finish the race with no knee pain, a smile on your face, and the excitement to run again soon. How do you get from here to there? Look for clues in the vision.In the “miracle future,” there’s a friend running alongside. Have you ever asked a friend to train with you? Running with someone could solve boredom and help build consistency.No knee pain? Great, perhaps it’s those new shoes or that feeling of strength, is it time to explore better footwear or add strength exercises to your week? You could ask the sports shop for help. Or you could find a simple 5 minute strength routine to add to your training plan.&nbsp;In the vision, you're not out of breath. This suggests you've built cardio fitness well, slowly perhaps by following a beginner-friendly running plan. It’s not about sprinting from the start—it’s about steady, sustainable progress. You might realize you've always tried to go too fast too quickly.Find small wins and a first stepThe idea of training hard for a race might feel overwhelming now, but what’s one thing you can do this week? Maybe it’s buying those new shoes, asking a friend to join you in training, or doing a short, slow run to get started. Maybe it's spending some time to research a new running plan, or looking for a local club for some community. Each step gets you closer to the vision. You'll begin to build consistency and find next steps as you go. All you now have to do is take the first small step forward.&nbsp;By shifting the focus from obstacles to solutions, the path becomes clearer. You don’t need to figure it all out today—just start with the first small step. It can help you visualize a better future and take steps to make it a reality.&nbsp;By deeply exploring this wanted state with the question "What is different?" you give yourself threads to work with and ideas of the small steps needed to move forwards.&nbsp;Change is a process. Be patient with yourself and stay committed to your goals. You may slide back as you try to take steps forward but you can always revisit the process, return to when the miracle has happened and ask again...What is different? With time and effort, you can achieve the future you desire. What is Different?: Understanding the Miracle Question

Life directions. Making a big decision. Choice.

Being in a new land brings challenges. Everything is different and you are a long way from home. Sometimes the days seem to lead nowhere in terms of building the life you really want there.&nbsp;Recently I have spoken to a number of people who are beginning to struggle with thoughts about should I stay or should I go? Is it worth the levels of resilience and persistence needed to stay in their new country and keep pushing forward or should they come to the conclusion they would be better trying elsewhere, even back "home" again?Such thoughts are very natural when perhaps finding work is not working out, maybe you have a time limit due to a visa, you are struggling to understand if you are "beginning to understand" the new cultures, or you are just feeling uncertain that you made the right move. I'm often all for being resilient and understanding that struggles are useful from the perspective of learning, growing your own sense of who you really are and how you cope with difficulties, but how do we know when we are moving towards a point when enough is enough?Below are some steps you could take to help you gain clarity on whether staying in the new country aligns with your values and goals, especially while navigating career challenges. It will help you explore both the practical and emotional aspects of the decision, and maybe help you bring focus on what truly matters to you, to inform that decision as best as only you can. I'd recommend setting up time and space for this. I find going somewhere new for a few hours, maybe a library or a new cafe can be stimulating to thinking. If you can, leave distractions behind, leave your phone at home, just take a pen and some paper. It's surprising how it can help clear your mind to not have your tech with you and avoid the inevitable interruptions it can bring for a few hours. You don't need to be far from home and can inform people near you so they can reach you easily if needed. You can revisit the work you do in this time over the next days and weeks and use it in discussions with your family, friends or loved ones.&nbsp;Reflect on Your Values and Goals In this section, you’ll write about what matters most to you at this stage in life and how your new country or city aligns with those priorities. Values: List your top values. Sometimes building a value tree can help here. This part of the work holds the truth to everything that follows.&nbsp;A value tree starts with your core purpose, or overarching goal that reflects what you most value in life - "Live a fulfilling life", or "Have meaningful relationships" are examples.&nbsp;Break this core purpose down into a few key areas of your own personal values. These are wide areas that can contribute to your main goal in ways that matter to you. For example "Relationships", "Purpose or Meaning", "Career Growth".For each of these look into how they expand to more specific values that give more depth and clarity.As an example for relationships you could decide that "Trust", "Caring", "Communication" are what matter the most to you. If you take "Health and Wellness" as a key area, what does that mean to you? It could be "Fitness" or "Nutrition" or it could be "Balance" and "Honesty with Yourself"Finally you can take each area and look at how this manifests itself practically for you to support your values. If we look at "Health and Wellness" again we can maybe think this could be "Regular exercise", "Mindfulness practice", "Hobbies " or perhaps it's "Community", "Avoiding Burnout"Your finished value tree could look something like this:Core Purpose: Live a fulfilling life<ul><li>Relationships<ul><li>Trust</li><li>Communication</li><li>Caring</li></ul></li><li>Health and Wellbeing<ul><li>Exercise</li><li>Mental Wellness</li><li>Group Hobbies or Sports</li></ul></li><li>Personal Growth<ul><li>Curiosity</li><li>Resilience</li><li>Adventure</li></ul></li><li>Purpose and Meaning<ul><li>Community</li><li>Spirituality</li><li>Helping others</li></ul></li></ul>Now you have your values in mind you can ask yourself how do each of these currently play out in your life? What opportunities does your new location offer that align with your values? Where does it fall short? Write the answers to these questions down in as much detail as possible.Career Goals: You know your values now but what about your career? How do you want your career to develop? Describe your ideal career situation, both in the short term and the long term. Be as specific as possible.Write down what you are interested in working with, what you imagine this will give you in your career, what it will bring to your sense of wellbeing and achievement. Consider how you will feel in this future career path, what is your ideal outcome and how will it impact your life and the lives of those around you at work and at home. Consider everything you can here, for example, what type of company you wish to work for, what culture and purpose they will have, what language you will use, how will your cultural background bring benefit and added value.&nbsp;Now consider can this new country provide opportunities that align with these goals? Are there unique professional growth opportunities here that would be harder to find elsewhere? For each area you wrote about, look at what is available (or not) to support you in your new land.&nbsp;What’s Working and What’s Not?You need to have a clear picture of the positives and challenges of staying.What’s Working: Write everything you enjoy or appreciate about your new location, whether it’s the environment, people, lifestyle, or cultural aspects. Reflect on how each of these factors impacts your happiness or personal growth. What's not working: List specific career rejections, obstacles, or issues that have felt challenging. Reflect on which challenges are likely to improve over time and which may be harder to overcome. Are these issues tied to being in a new country, or are they general challenges that might occur elsewhere? Visualize Two Future Paths Write down how you envision your life going if you either decide to stay in this country or if you choose to leave and return to a place that feels more familiar. Path A (Staying): Write a brief narrative about what your life could look like if you decide to stay. Consider professional and personal aspects over the next 6 months to a year. How do you feel in this future? What do you experience daily? Path B (Leaving): Write a narrative about what your life could look like if you decide to return to your home country or another familiar place. Reflect on whether returning might offer an easier career path or a sense of comfort, and how that compares to the growth and challenges you’d miss out on by leaving. Weighing the Intangible Aspects Intangible elements—like a sense of belonging, adventure, or fulfillment—have a strong influence and can help us make tough decisions. Ask yourself these questions and write down your responses:&nbsp;<ul><li>What have I learned about myself during this time?</li><li>Am I growing in ways I wouldn’t have elsewhere?</li><li>What would I regret more in the long run: staying and struggling a bit longer, or leaving and potentially missing out on the unknowns here?</li></ul>Actionable Steps to Test Your Decision If you’re still uncertain, think about wether you could you try a “test period” of committed effort to make the most of your current situation. If you think this will help consider the followingSet a Timeframe: Choose a time period (e.g., 3 or 6 months) to focus on making this work and look for new strategies to overcome career obstacles.Seek Support: Reach out to a local mentor, career coach, or join networking groups to better understand the job market and create connections. Evaluate After the Test Period: Revisit this exercise after your test period and see if your thoughts have changed. You may feel differently with more experiences under your belt or clearer insights into your goals and values. Some final thoughtsMoving abroad is a major life shift, not everyone will attempt it and the discomfort you’re feeling now is a natural part of that adjustment. I hope by reflecting on both the practical and emotional sides of the decision, you can gain a clearer sense of whether your new country offers the potential for the life you want or if you’d feel more fulfilled returning to a familiar place. No choice has to be permanent—you’re free to adapt and make changes based on your evolving priorities and experiences and we cannot predict the future or what it will bring. Also try to remember nothing ventured, nothing gained. You have already ventured! Your move has already taught you many things and helped you grow, however you decide to look at the future you have not failed in any way by things not working out as you maybe hoped they would. There is a great quote "If you believe you can or believe you can't you are probably right". Your coach will help you break down your larger goals into smaller, actionable steps. This not only makes your goals more manageable but also increases your chances of success.By setting the right type of goals, you can stay focused and motivated throughout the process. Your coach will hold you accountable and provide support when challenges arise.Many people focus only on "realistic" or "achievable" goals and there is definitely a place for those but who is the judge of what you can achieve? I personally believe you can reach high and it's not for me to decide if your goals are too lofty. Whatever they are we can work towards them together. Many great things have happened because of "moonshot" thinking!<h3>Developing New Habits and Mindset</h3>Another crucial aspect of personal development is developing new habits and mindset. Your coach can help you identify negative patterns and replace them with positive ones. They can teach you strategies for managing stress, improving time management, and enhancing your overall well-being.With the support of your coach, you can cultivate a growth mindset – the belief that you can learn, grow, and improve throughout your life.
